Nearly every stakeholder, and/ or constituent, has some opinion, about individuals serving in positions of leadership. Unfortunately, more often, than not, the methodologies used, for these evaluations, are far less than objective, and often, are based on popularity, either of a personality, and/ or the rhetoric and promises made! We rarely judge potential and/ or actual leader, on how they represent the organization, they serve, and/ or the constituents, they should represent. Therefore, this article will attempt to briefly examine and discuss, using the mnemonic approach, 5 ways to effectively, and objectively examine and JUDGE a leader.

1. Judgment; just: How can anyone claim to be a true leader, until/ unless he consistently proceeds, seeking what is just, needed, and best, for those he serves? Does the individual exhibit the quality of judgment, which focuses on needs, concerns, relevance, and the finest, sustainable solution, which addresses, not only short – term needs and concerns, but, also, longer – term ramifications?

2. Useful; usable; unique: While, obviously, we want our leaders to provide useful solutions, it is necessary, for them, to also be easily usable, and applicable! Consider what unique characteristics, a specific individual, possesses, and how those might make a difference, for the best, for both, the organization, and stakeholders!

3. Delve deeply; deliver; deems: How might any specific individual, determine what he deems most relevant and significant? Seek leaders who consistently delve deeply, consider fully and comprehensively, and proceed, in a timely manner, to over – deliver, and under – promise!

4. Growth; generate goodwill: In my four decades of identifying, qualifying, training. developing, and consulting to thousands of actual and/ or potential leaders, I have become convinced, organizations must consistently, gradually, and effectively, undergo growth, or risk, diminishing their significance and relevance! Ask them, how they might generate goodwill, not because of their rhetoric and/ or promises, but, rather, by the quality of their strategic and action plans!

5. Empathy; efforts; excellence: Perhaps, the first realization, one must have, if he wishes to be a true leader, is, leadership requires consistent, meaningful, relevant efforts, focused on constituents and the organization, as a whole! However, unless one begins, by effectively listening, and learning what stakeholders seek, want, prioritize, and are concerned with, he will not proceed, with the level of quality empathy, needed of a great leader. They must never accept, merely, good – enough, or being mediocre, but, rather, the highest level of consistent excellence!
